The Smart Gardener’s Guide to Watering in Spring

It’s time to get serious about your garden’s hydration needs. As a gardener in Zone 8a, you’re no stranger to the ups and downs of the weather. One minute it’s sunny, and the next, a random downpour has your plants looking like they just went for a swim. But don’t sweat it! Here’s your smart gardener’s guide to watering in Zone 8a, complete with a month-by-month breakdown to help you get your irrigation schedule just right. Trust us, your plants will thank you.

March: As the temperatures start to rise, your plants begin waking up from their winter slumber. This is when you want to start slowly turning on your irrigation system. You’re not in full-blown summer mode yet, so aim for a deep watering every 10-14 days. If you’ve been blessed with rain (thank you, April showers!), you might even be able to stretch that watering schedule a bit. Just make sure your system is running smoothly, with no clogged nozzles or broken timers. Start low and slow, and adjust as things warm up.

April: Ah, April. We love the sunshine, but we know it brings the heat. By now, you should be watering about once a week, especially if we’ve had some dry spells. As the soil starts warming up, make sure your sprinklers are giving your plants a nice, deep soak (about 1-1.5 inches of water each time). Be careful not to overdo it—nobody wants to turn their garden into a puddle. This is also a good time to check that your rain sensors are working properly. We don’t need to water the garden and let the rain do its thing.

May: Okay, now it’s time to get serious. As the temperatures really start to climb in May, you’ll want to amp up your irrigation game to prepare for the summer heat ahead. Increase your watering to about 2 inches per week, and if you’ve got warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers, make sure they’re getting extra attention. It’s also a good time to start paying attention to the time of day when you’re watering. Early morning is the best time to water—less evaporation, more hydration for your plants. Keep your system on a schedule and make adjustments as needed.

As summer approaches, don’t forget to adjust your irrigation as the weather fluctuates. Cheap Sprinklers has all the tools you need to make sure your sprinklers are doing their job without overwatering. Whether you’re looking for a rain sensor, timer, or just some solid advice, we’ve got your back. So, keep an eye on your irrigation system, adjust when needed, and let us help you keep your garden hydrated and happy all spring long. And remember, don’t drown your plants—get the smart watering system that works for you!
