maybe silly question: the batteries in the controller move the valve? The valve itself doesn't need a power source?

That is correct! The battery operated controller will activate the plunger in the solenoid to open the valve and then it will energize the solenoid again to cut it off!
So the battery operated controller will be the valves power source!
