will this controller work with irritrol valves? do I need an adapter for the solinoid?

You will need to purchase the 400A-000 controller that does not come preinstalled with a valve. The 30-924 solenoid adapter is included with the 400A-000 and that should allow the solenoid to fit on your irritrol valve.
