Is this hot swapping expandable available as purchased or do I need to purchase this module as an extra?
Weathermatic - SmartLine 4-Station Indoor/Outdoor Controller (Expandable to 16 Zones) - SL1600
Probably going to have 11-12 zones as I get the hang of doing the whole lawn - front and back.

Nope you will just need to order the SL!600. If you are going to need 12 zones, then you will just need to buy 2 of the SLM4 Expansion Modules as the controller comes with 4 stations pre-installed and that will get you to 12.
